Clean, gray and black water: why the source matters
Restoration companies sort water damage by how dirty the water is. The category changes what can be saved, what is safe to touch and what the job costs.

The three categories
| Category | Typical sources | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Clean water | Broken supply pipe, sink or tub overflow with clean water, rain through a window | Most materials can be dried and saved if drying starts fast |
| 2. Gray water | Washing machine or dishwasher discharge, toilet overflow with urine but no feces, aquarium | Can make people sick. Wear gloves, keep kids and pets out, clean and disinfect what you keep |
| 3. Black water | Sewage backup, toilet overflow with feces, flood water from a bayou, street or yard | Do not clean it up yourself. Porous materials it touched, such as carpet, pad and drywall, are usually removed |
The categories come from the IICRC S500 standard used by the restoration trade. The summary above is in plain words; your company may describe them in more detail.
Clean water does not stay clean
Water picks up dirt and germs from floors, carpet and walls. Clean water that sits for a few days, or soaks into materials, is treated as a higher category. That is one more reason to start drying within 24 to 48 hours. (EPA)
Flood water from outside is always treated as dirty
Rising water from a storm or bayou carries sewage, chemicals and debris. EPA guidance for flood cleanup is to throw away anything soaked by flood water that cannot be cleaned and dried completely within 24 to 48 hours. (EPA flood cleanup guide)
How the category changes the cost
Dirtier water means more protective gear, more cleaning and disinfecting, and more materials removed instead of dried, so a gray or black water job usually costs more than a clean water job of the same size. Ask the company to write the category on the estimate. See water damage restoration costs.
What to tell the company
When you send a request or call, say where the water came from, how long it sat, and which rooms it reached. That tells the company the likely category and what equipment to bring.

Questions people ask
What is Category 3 water damage?
Category 3, or black water, is grossly contaminated water such as sewage, a toilet overflow with feces, or flood water from outside. Porous materials it soaks are usually removed, and it should be cleaned up by a professional.
Is a washing machine leak gray water?
Yes. Discharge water from a washing machine or dishwasher is usually treated as Category 2, gray water, because it can carry soap, dirt and germs.
Can clean water damage become black water?
Yes. Water picks up contamination from floors and building materials, and water that sits for days is treated as a higher category. Start drying within 24 to 48 hours.
Does the water category change the price?
Usually, yes. Gray and black water need more protective gear, more cleaning and more removal of soaked materials, so they cost more than a clean water job of the same size. Ask for the category on the written estimate.
